REBLOG: A Note to "Older" Members from a Goodreads Refugee

Reblogged from Debbie's Notes

I'm sure all these goodreads posts are of no use to existing booklikes members.  And I've seen a few postings from them wondering about all these new followers (please don't blames us -- signing up for a booklikes account makes us initially follow 25 members that booklikes assigns us.  We'll eventualy sort it out to only follow others with similar reading tastes or whose posts we enjoy).

Please don't think we all came over here to post offensive, threatening material.  Allegations of bullying, rape threats, etc. sure do make good headlines.  And good headlines go viral.

Some of us never wrote reviews on goodreads.  Or had any shelf names worse than "Western" "Memoir" etc.

We already love booklikes for daily update posts and quick response to comments and email.  It's incredibly soothing compared to our experiences with goodreads.

We are booklovers.  Avid booklovers.  We're the ones who worked tirelessly making goodreads  immense database and membership a takeover target for amazon.  Now that amazon has our data, they don't want us.  Just to market our data to customers buying new kindles and amazon fire.  They killed Shelfari who used to be the kindle integrated book site and now are replacing Shelfari with goodreads.

Some of us are here just to protect our book catalogs, as in we seriously have no idea what will or won't be deleted at goodreads.   Likely very quiet members at that.

[REBLOG] What Bullying Really Looks Like

Reblogged from isamlq:

Due to the reblogging thing, I can't tell who wrote this, but damn, it's worth a read.

I hate telling this story. Just the thought of doing so, of exposing my past to even a handful of other people, makes me feel sick to my stomach. But with Goodreads' change in policy occurring and the word "bullying" being slung around so casually, I think it's time.

How to Kill a Rock Star - Tiffanie DeBartolo I'm going to keep this very short! I LOVED this book! The writing is superb and that's something rare lately. Thanks Rosa, Mo and Irene for recommending this one!
Undying (Undeniable, #5) - Madeline Sheehan Can we have this one first?

This is the best one in the series! My only critique is I wish there'd been more of Michael and Ellie......Wow! What a story! It's been a while since I've gotten so in to a book! I would have read it in one sitting if I'd had the time. Well done Madeline!
At Peace (The 'Burg, #2) - Kristen Ashley I really liked this one a lot and I'm glad after my first KA book was a huge crash and burn for me. It was almost a 5 star read but I did feel like parts of it dragged. The characters were all great so I would definitely recommend it.
Mrs. Maddox (Beautiful, #1.5) - Jamie McGuire How Charming!

I love things that are sentimental :)

The Fault in Our Stars - John Green About my rating: Let me start off by saying that although I loved the book, it wasn't as good as I though it would be. It's one of those cases where it's over exposure, high ratings and so many people rallying "best book ever" had my expectations completely off the charts. Now, just because it didn't meet my expectations doesn't mean I it deserves anything less than 5 stars.

This books has some of the best lines I've read in one book in a very long time. It will definitely go onto my always-a-keeper shelf. Don't let the subject scare you away, it's possible to read this book without sobbing...or even crying; I did. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone.
Tailspin (Better Than You, #2) - Raquel Valldeperas *arc provided in exchange for an honest review*

I loved the first book so much I was highly anticipating the release of this one. When the author contacted me asking if I would read it before it was released.....I was beyond excited...

I was humbled...

photo tumblr_inline_mg4nynG3CW1ry4qim_zps51afbbf8.gif

It made my day.

Now I would like to throw out this disclaimer... I don't know this author from Adam's house cat. I got a copy of her first book Toxic from The New Adult Book Club. I contacted her after I read it to let her know how good I thought it was and she thanked me. That is about the gist of our relationship. I say that because when I see books that don't have a lot of reviews I wonder if the 5 star reviews are from family and friends...I'm neither. So if you're a cynic like me you can rest assured I actually did love the book and I can't wait for more from this author.

We've established I loved Toxic, which is Lo's story and in which Nathan is a character. Tailspin is told from Nathan's POV but it isn't the same story just retold from a different POV. This is actually Nathan's story. It has a totally different feel from the first book and really has me excited to hear more from this author.

Bottom line: I highly recommend both books! They have highly authentic characters who deal with and persevere through some of life's harshest circumstances.
Going Under - S. Walden This book has the scariest kind of character you can find in a book....the charming sociopath Nothing scares me more. The reason being, they actually exist in real life.

I loved the main character Brooke and could totally relate with how her mind worked about all the situations going on around her.

I felt the ending was a little rushed or just "too wrapped up" a bit hence the 4 stars instead of 5. Overall this is a good book dealing with a bad topic and some very bad people.
My Little Train - Satomi Ichikawa My daughter loves this book. She loves repeating the train sounds "whoo whoo" and all the animal (passenger) sounds as well. I would definitely recommend for a toddler.
Epilogue: The Dark Duet (The Dark Duet, #2.5) - C.J. Roberts I was never able to be fully drawn into this book like I was the first two. As much as I wanted Caleb and Livvie to move past their experience and integrate into society, I'm not sure I actually wanted to watch it happen. I loved Seduce in the Dark so much and I think it was truly the masterpiece of the series. So of course since I loved the characters so much, I wanted more. Now that I got what I thought I wanted, I'm not so sure.

Here's an example of why this book was just 'off' for me.

Yeah, that is just one example and the book was full of super cutesy stuff that just didn't really fit with the series. You know what they say about too much of a good thing.
Beneath This Man (This Man, #2) - Jodi Ellen Malpas I can give you four words why this book is only getting four stars.....

Watch your fucking mouth

It's that much of an issue and source of contention with me. I loathe a double standard and this one really gets me all riled up.

The first 75% of the book is a lot of bickering back and forth and it really wore on my nerves. Just when I was getting fed up, I got totally gobsmacked. I'm talking a whole range of emotions:

I WAS SHOCKED

I WAS ANGRY

I LITERALLY GOT SICK

I WAS SPEECHLESS

I was so emotionally and mentally stirred up I got to wondering if I was on drugs...or if I needed to be.

It's clear these two are toxic to each other and they've managed to infect me with their poison.

"We make each other crazy. That's the truth of it. We're no good for each other, and he does manipulate me. The problem is, I enjoy it."

Jesse has been able to enrage me to the point of book homicide and yet he's still managed to secure a place in my heart. This man is truly something else and I'm anticipating his confession.

It's Time to Sleep, My Love - Nancy Tillman, Nancy (ILT) Tillman Eric Metaxas This is an excellent bedtime story. The meter is soothing and it's honestly just the sweetest book! My daughter loves it and I love reading it to her :)
